The Friends of Sherwood Island State Park have a stated mission to “preserve, maintain, improve, and enhance Sherwood Island State Park for the benefit of the general public,” to “solicit and raise funds,” and to “educate the public about the resources, needs, and value of the park.” The organizations initial efforts supported the small Nature Center behind the West Beach in the park. In 2009, seven years after the original building had closed, the Friends’ support led to the opening a new Nature Center. Located on the coast of Westport, Connecticut, Sherwood Island State Park is a popular fishing and swimming destination in the state. As well as the Nature Center, Sherwood Island State Park hosts facilities for picnicking and for field sports. The Friends of Sherwood Island State Park advocate for the preservation and improvement of these facilities.
